Historic 19th Century Checks from the Colorado Gold Mining Town of Central City.Central City– “
the richest square mile on earth”
! It earned that name from the vast quantities of gold found in the area from mid 1800’s up to the early 1900's.
The checks have 3 distinct styles. Two are drawn on Rocky Mountain National Bank accounts and the other from Hanington & Mellor, Bankers.
These check are from the 1880’s, the height of the gold rush days.
The checks are from the historic McFarlane & Co, one of the most important gold mine and mill equipment companies in Colorado during that time.
The company and its founder, Peter McFarlane, played a major role in developing two ore processing machines: the Gilpin County Slow Drop Stamp Mill and the Gilpin County Gilt Edge Concentrator.
Peter McFarlane was elected mayor of Central City in 1878 and served as city councilman in 1876, 1877, 1880 and 1881
Peter McFarlane helped to build the famous Central City Opera House in 1878. Later he helped to renovate the structure and became its sole owner
